I just received a text message from myself which I didn’t send. How is this possible? Are ppl able to hack phone numbers?

No need to change your password … but anytime is a good time to do so.
Changing the “from” on an outbound CallerID is only slightly harder than putting somebody else as the return address on an envelope.
It might not have even targeted “You” … but this was the day that your block of phone numbers received the phishing / hacking attempt.
HOWEVER … while you’re “thinking security” … you might enable 2FA if you haven’t done so already … or review all of your settings if you have.

If it was a green bubble (SMS) text message then someone spoofed your phone number to make it look like it was you. I have received spam calls from myself in the past as well as from neighbors, friends, etc.
Yep, I get those. It is a phishing text don’t respond and delete it.
Remember it’s fairly easy for ner-do-wells to spoof (masquerade as) nearly ANY phone number, including yours.
DO NOT response or click the link in the message, the website may be placed some harmful scripts to stole information on your phone.
If you keep receiving these kind of messages, you could try to either block the sender, or find the pattern and block the messages with same "keywords".
I saw an article yesterday that it’s a know issue by Verizon. At first they shrugged it off. Then they got inundated with service calls and put a team together to review/fix the issue.
This was the exact same text I received from "myself" today and it was an iMessage because the text bubble wasn't green. So confusing. I changed my password right away but still trying to figure out how that could happen?
I couldn’t block it because it says it sent from me. I don’t know how to block messages with certain keywords. I’m not sure if I need to change my Apple ID password or my email password. I don’t have a phone # password.
Thanks so much! I’ll post what the text said. Would you pls let me know if this is something what it looks like?
Thanks so much deggie!!!
I received 2 yesterday (3/28/2022). Exact same text as you but the 2 links on mine are different.
I like to know how this could happen as well.
Interesting, I’ll contact Verizon and see what they say.
It isn’t just Verizon.
Indeed … it’s now made it to the national morning news broadcasts.
