I do quite a bit of coding. So this is becoming annoying. Whenever I try to move to previous line it opens Mission Control. My only option is to hold the option key and go back to beginning of the word.

It may be keyboard malfunction. Try to check your keyboard with Apple Diagnostics if it reports keyboard related error(NDK001, NDK003, NDK004).

If it doesn't help, you'd better make Genius Bar reservation if retail AppleStore is located near you or find local Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined your MacBook Pro there. As far as I know, just examines the Mac free for charge.
