Contact name changed on texts only

Woke up this morning to a switcharoo in my phone. My friend and I have years worth of texts. This morning the name had been changed from Kim to Pamela in the imessage app. When I click on “info” in the message app above our text thread it shows Pamela with Pamela’s number and yet all of my text exchange with Kim.

When she rang my phone, it showed the contact as Kim with her correct number. But if I pull up her contact from the recent call to send an iMessage, the text thread shows up as Pamela with Pamela’s number.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

Hello alethatruth,

If the name of a contact in the Messages app is incorrect, then the first thing we would recommend is to restart your iPhone using these steps:

1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

Ensure your iPhone is fully updated as well. This info from Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch shows how to do this:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.

2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.

3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.

4. If you see two software update options available, choose the one that you want to install.

If this continues after restarting and updating your device, then we would advise contacting Apple Support to get the best assistance going forward.
