I just created a new Apple ID because we had two old iphones using the same account (big mistake we weren't aware of). I couldn't find a way to switch my old phone to the new account and started a data backup. It was going to the old shared account so I shut it off. Now what?
I want to transfer only the data from my old phone to my new one using the new ID.

There's a problem. The tech guy at Costco supposedly tried a data transfer from old to new phones. however as we only have one Apple ID used by both old iPhones the contact list got mixed up. The photos never did transfer over. Worse yet, when the old phones are on our local Wifi, calling one phone results in ALL the phones ringing. The tech guy at Costco said it was an Apple problem related to the shared account.
A suggestion we got was to go to the local Apple store and have them look at the situation. Guess we'll do that.
You may need to transfer the data from the old phone to the new phone before signing in with your new Apple ID.

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. If possible, also set up Family Sharing between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.
