Why is System Data taking so much space? (204 GB)

I'm going through files trying to do a general cleanup of my system. When I open the Manage Space window from About this Mac, I get the report saying my System Data is at about 204 GB. What is that about?

I'm finding other people that have a similar problem, but still no solution or explanation. Please help.

I'm on a 2021 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)
