iPhone forced me to change 4 digit passcode to 8 digits

2 days ago my iPhone forced me to change my 4 digit passcode to an 8 digit passcode. When I go into settings to change it back I am only given the options of an 8 digit numerical or an alphanumeric code. I don’t understand why this is happening. No one else around me has had this happen on their phone.

While this is the first I’d heard of it, I can only surmise it’s a Security enhancement.

W/o going into statistical probability, 8 digits are more secure than 4 with all else being equal.

Human Factors:

It’s not too difficult for a skilled fraudster to observe and memorize your entry of a 4-numeric digit passcode.

Doing so w/ 8-digits is MUCH more difficult.

If you use an all-numeric passcode, the “added workload” imposed by entering 4 more digits is negligible.
