Apple Watch steps

I just got a new Apple Watch recently and I am new to the apple fitness stuff. When I take it off to charge or take a shower, I have noticed that the steps goes up a little bit when I put it back on and I am standing still. So I was curious if the Apple Watch can track your steps and health data even if its not technically on you but near you?

The watch can only record whilst it is on your wrist, sometimes if the watch is doing something in the background then when it's finished it will update your steps etc, this is probably what you saw.

Remember the watch is a small computer and like all computers it prioritises things that happen.
