Shortcuts...

I understand what shortcuts mean, but not in the context of its' use here on my desktop. Can "shortcuts" be used on a desktop computer? Can "apps" only be used with on a smart phone? I don't own a smartphone, perhaps you understand why... Can someone show me an actual, real time, example?

As always, thank you.

You can also use the tool that is pre-installed on your Mac (it's been on Mac OS for years) called Automator. Look that up and it can automate processes for you. Say for example you have your photos with .jpg or .jpeg spread all over your computer. You could create an Automator routine to move them all into 1 folder so they would become easier to organize.

"Apps" is short for "applications". Some people make a distinction between apps, which are used on mobile devices, and applications which are used on computers. But lots of people don't.

Whatever you call them, they are written for a specific operating system. What that means is that an iPhone app will not work on your computer. It's possible, though, that the developer of the app has also written a version for your computer.

I think this Youtube video will help answer your question on what a Desktop folder is.

In short it very similar to your desk at home. You can papers lying all over it that you leave there so you can quickly refer to them. You can organize those papers into folders too, such as "bills to pay", correspondence to answer, Taxes, articles I want to read. A computers Desktop folder is exactly the same, you can organize your information just like you would like to. At any rate, please watch the video and it will show you.

Thank you.. I will certainly check out that video on YouTube. I have problems organizing items by date and or time. I also have problems separating items I would like to put into different folders. I was the recording secretary for a local Italian-American Club for about ten years. I, and still to this day, was never able to figure out how to organize the meeting minutes by date. Any other letters, correspondences, etc., they would all get stored in "Documents" because I can't figure out how to sort them out into their own places ( and by date)...and into their own "folders?" I mean, is that what I want to do? Is that how I should organize that sort of stuff? I'm extremely reluctant to just push buttons and try to figure it out on my own, because I'm afraid I might "lose" something...and it wouldn't be the first time. I also find stuff in places that leaves me saying to myself, 'how and why did that get there?' I really find it almost incredulously ironic that computers seemed to be more and more complicated to use as opposed to more straight forward and simple to use. Maybe it's just me, but the fact that this site exists kind of bears me out...I think.

So what is a/my "Desktop Folder" and what does it do? What does it look like? Come to think of it, what is meant by the term "Desktop?" What is that referring to?" I have folders on what I think is referred to as the "sidebar." And if I have those there, why might I need a "Desktop Folder?"

Thanks for trying to help. There is just so, so, much I simply do not understand about computers, but I'm trying...
