Battery macbook pro (build 2017) always empty after sleep

Since ~10 months (think when upgrading to OSX Big Sur?) the battery of my macbook pro (13" build 2017; newly bought and in use from April 2018) is always empty after sleep. If it goes to sleep at 100/90/80% the morning after when i open it the screen lights up for some seconds and then goes black. To get the computer to work i need to plug it in (sometimes when plugged in it shows still 30% battery).

But is it normal for a macbook pro that has been used for 3 years that it starts doing this, i.e. the quality is worse than most PCs?

How can i stop this from happening?

NB: What is strange when i check battery is that it mentions largest battery drain from Photos (an application i have never used, never opened and never want to use), this happened since OSX Monterey.

  • I have already searched the internet for solutions, also tried to change the settings of hibernate to force it to sleep.
  • I do not use Chrome or any other non-apple app (I mainly use Mail, Safari, Preview and the terminal);
  • i have checked all my battery settings;
  • when using my laptop the first 3 years i have never left it on the charger too long, kept battery between 20-80% as much as possible , and all the other obvious solutions.

Anyone else with these problems and a solution? Or should i accept that apple does not have the quality anymore that they used to have and give up on a macbook that is 4 years old?

Apple has a free Keyboard Repair Program for these laptops as long as the laptop's initial purchase date is less than four years old. Most likely your laptop is more than four years old now, but you can always check with Apple or an AASP to confirm.

FYI, here is the current list of the publicly acknowledged free repair programs for various Apple products (some products such as your laptop may have multiple programs):

Apple Service Programs - Apple Support

if i have something connected to the USB-C my wifi does not work anymore - modem did not have the 5 GHz option at that time; external drives get randomly disconnected etc.) and maybe i should stop looking for a solution, even though it is frustrating for such an expensive machine not to work properly.

Most likely the I/O Board is bad either from some accidental liquid damage (very common on the laptops I service), or because the USB-C cable connectors are too loose fitting in the laptop's USB-C ports because the I/O Board edges have worn enough so they no longer provide a snug fit for the cables. There is also a possibility that the Logic Board could be bad possibly from connecting a bad external device. Usually when you experience problems like this you will want to try the device on another USB-C port especially on the other side of the laptop. You may also want to try rotating the USB-C cable connector 180 degrees upside down which can sometimes help if the USB-C port is half bad.

With these added symptoms, I strongly suspect your laptop has some hardware issues. If you are lucky they will be restricted to just the I/O Boards and not the Logic Board.

As for the WiFi not working after connecting a USB-C device, I have never seen that occur except on a YouTube video by a well respected repair tech who repairs Apple Logic Boards.

I have been seeing lots of issues with our USB-C Apple laptops where the laptop requests the charger to be connected even when the battery charge level is sufficiently charged. These Apple USB-C laptops have a lot of quirks and design flaws. I am ignoring this particular issue with our organization's USB-C Apple laptops because I see no solution for it and it is just an annoyance as the laptops are otherwise working Ok.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe that is indeed it, this model is just very poor quality (after 1 year the keyboard started to show issues; if i have something connected to the USB-C my wifi does not work anymore - modem did not have the 5 GHz option at that time; external drives get randomly disconnected etc.) and maybe i should stop looking for a solution, even though it is frustrating for such an expensive machine not to work properly.
