How to change the email address in Apple ID to the one currently used

I no longer use the email address I used to create my Apple ID. How do I change that to my current one and link it to my iPhone?

Sign in to your Apple ID account page and edit your Apple ID details.

Note the restrictions in the article.

Apple ID Name Change. *

Make sure you turn of Find My Phone before signing out of the old ID. Once signed out and Find My Phone is off, then sign in with the new ID, then turn Find My Phone back on.
