Blocking iMessage spam conversations, and deleting the conversation

I can fairly easily block an unwanted spam conversation in iMessage. However, my primary question is, can I delete the icon and conversation and still keep that spammer blocked?

You should be able to delete the conversation and have them blocked as long as they are blocked in Messages/Preferences/Accounts/Blocked.
