You'll want to make sure you have a compatible iPhone model first:

"Supported iPhone models for Precision Finding

• iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
• iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max"

This could apply as well, depending on exactly what's happening:

"Your AirTag must be within Bluetooth range to use Precision Finding or play a sound using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If it's out of range, get directions to it first. Precision Finding uses Ultra Wideband, which is not available in all countries or regions. Learn more about Ultra Wideband availability."
