I just increased iCloud sub to 2T, but after just 400GB i got 'Manage Disk Space' alert

I just increased iCloud sub from 200Gb to 2T, but after transferring just 400GB i got a 'Manage Disk Space' alert ... at the same time, my resident SSD on my Mac seems to have filled up by the same amount I transferred over to iCloud ... yet I cannot see in Finder where it has filled up ...

.... I just don't get this, how and why should it do that - I must be doing something wrong otherwise what's the point of iCloud?

I would be very grateful if someone can help.

iCloud syncs files between your devices using the cloud. Anything in iCloud is also on your Mac. iCloud is primarily a sync service, not offline storage. You can enable Optimize Mac Storage (System Preferences > Apple ID) which will then offload your oldest/largest files as space is needed on your Mac.

Yes, anything you delete will be removed from iCloud and any connected device. But, if you moved your files from say an external drive into your iCloud Drive folder, you can simply move those back. Or, if you retained the files you uploaded elsewhere, you can simply delete. That's effectively the "undo."

Yes, if you downgrade, anything above the 200GB will be removed.

Thanks for that, that wasn’t at all clear to me, so now I want to revert back to where I was sub- 200gb but now I get threats that anything I remove from iCloud will be deleted EVERYWHERE ! There’s no simple ‘undo’.

So it seems that I have to backup all that I put on to cloud, before I can revert back to my former 200gb subscription… wow what a bad experience.

Given iCloud is pushed so by Apple I find the whole iCloud thing misleading and inelegant if not quirky

But thanks again for replying, that did help, I’ll be better tomorrow:)
