iOS: zooming on pdf changes which page is viewed

In some PDFs (the one I just noticed it on was https://www.lko.at/media.php?filename=download%3D%2F2015.08.04%2F1438696023668172.pdf&rn=Basiswissen.pdf ) zooming in and out also scrolls the pdf to another page. This doesn’t happen always but often, especially when I zoom out more than the page is wide.

To preempt the question: I’m using just two fingers to zoom in and out and don’t have anything else on the touchscreen.

I’m on iOS 15.4.1, iPhone 13 Pro Max and very happy that finally scrolling pdfs doesn’t lead to lag anymore.

I’m using the Safari browser app, so the native Apple PDF viewer (sorry about not giving that info, I must have edited it out at some point).

As I’ve said it happens with some PDFs but I couldn’t find any other examples right now. It doesn’t seem to happen with text heavy latex or word created PDFs.

My iOS installation is up to date, still on 15.4.1.

I also restarted the phone, no change, the problem persists.

Thanks for the reply!

Edited: which App I’m using.

Also I found a workaround: Download the file. At least in this case (the linked file above) looking at the PDF in the files app solved the problem.

Hello Schnabulator,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We'll need to learn some more details to better assist with this PDF related issue.

Which app are you using to view the PDF on your iPhone? Does this happen with PDF files from other sources, or only this one?

Try a normal restart of the iPhone to see if that helps resolve the issue.

We also suggest checking for any pending updates, which can help make sure the software is working as expected. This Apple Support page has the full steps to help get those updates installed: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply and clarification!

Since this happens in the Files app, we recommend deleting and reinstalling the app, which will help rule out app specific issues. Make sure you have a copy of your files downloaded or backed up with iCloud prior to deleting the app to make sure your data is safe.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Continue to delete and reinstall the app by following these steps:

Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

Should the issue continue, please Contact Apple Support for next steps.

All the best.
