Target disk mode

I tried to update my Mac iOS and instead I accidentally pressed target disk mode. It’s showing up with a lock and telling me to enter a pass, I don’t know how to get it to normal settings

I strongly recommend returning the computer for a refund. The computer was not setup for sale per the directions in What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac which has left you with a mess and likely a boat anchor.

If you cannot afford a new Mac you have options. The very best option is to buy an Apple Refurbished Mac directly from Apple. Navigate to www.apple.com and scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the Refurbished section. There is no downside to an Apple refurbished product, they are identical to new, come with the same warranty as a new product, are eligible for AppleCare and can save hundreds of $$$. Also there are interest free financing options available to you if you are qualified!!

Another option is to buy a used Mac from a reputable reseller such as www.macsales.com, these machines come with a limited warranty, have been professionally be setup for resale and are a great value. If cannot afford one of these, then continue saving until you can.

NEVER EVER buy a Mac from Marketplace, Ebay, Craigslist etc as you have NO idea what you are buying.

Best of luck!
