Downloads in Dock not sorted by date !

Arghhhh, lost Downloads folder in Dock, so when re-added it, never had this happen before, but it magnifies or expands and shows tiles of downloads in alphabetical order, not sortable! (So the download you just put there is only accessible if it happens to be the first in the alphabet!)

I tried all kinds of fixes suggested on this forum, but they don't work. It's just a black hole now of where the current download went and how to access it, unless you open Finder and your Downloads folder there.

Help!!
