ipad connection to imac

my I-Pad Air 2 is not showing up in locations when I connect it to my i-Mac, so as a consequence I cannot sync or backup,unless I use the Music tab,my I-Phone connects ok and shows up in locations,so that works ok, can anyone come up with a solution ..thanks in advance
