M1 Macbook Pro battery drains very quickly while asleep

My new M1 Macbook Pro 14" had really great battery life when I got it — I could go like 5 days using it several hours a day without charging. But for the last month or so, it drains very quickly while it's asleep. If I leave it unplugged overnight it will be dead by the time I wake up. This is what System Prefs shows, draining while the screen is not on at all:

If I enter pmset -g log | grep -i "wake from" in terminal, it looks like it's darkwaking every 10 seconds, which doesn't seem right:

This was happening at least since 13.3. I've also turned off Power Nap, turned off wake on LAN, turned off all sharing, and done an OS reinstall. Nothing has fixed this.

Perhaps this is a Faulty Device?:

How old is this Mac? Note that you have a one-year, out-of-the-box, limited-warranty with this. So, if it is covered under warranty, then see if you can get this service. Being faulty, it likely would be nothing on you. Ask Apple Support for assistance.

Apple Contact Us Info:

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there as Necessary
  • NOTE: Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, calls are taking a bit longer to get through. And, that makes sense, because many are at home working out-of-the-house or are taking classes over-the-web, this they have more time on their hands to contact Apple Support. So, it might take a bit to get through to Apple Support. But, just stay on the line, and someone will be with you :)

Along with my above reply.

Troubleshooting Mac Power Drain:

Three Things:

I. Boot in Safe Mode:

[Hold Down: shift key, upon boot], In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally seeing if you still get this error.

II. Try a New Admin User:

What happens when you create a new administrator user, and log into it? Do you still get this error? If not, then it is likely an error with the current user. If so, then it is likely an error with your Mac.

III. Reset your SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes changes (i.e. Installations) are made to the system and then settings (i.e. for Power) become corrupted, technically. So, reset both on your Mac. So, reset the SMC (Intel-only Macs) and reset the NVRAM or PRAM. It might take three tries. to fix this. So, be certain you have the time to do so.

Start With This:

"This is an M1 Mac, so no NVRAM, PRAM, or SMC to reset. I tried completely resetting to factory settings and not restoring from a backup, so I'm on a totally new user. At first it seemed to be fixed, but now I'm back to draining while asleep:"

Thank you for the screenshot.

Troubleshooting Mac Power Drain:

Some more thoughts...

A. Single-Out this User:

So, what happen when you create a new user (administrator-type)? See if you still get this issue. If not, then it is an issue with the configuration in the current user. If so, then it is likely an error with the entire Mac itself.

B. Reinstall the macOS:

Even though you performed a factory reset, try reinstalling the macOS. Perhaps the reinstall was not 100% done in full, and something became corrupt.

C. Scan for Malware:

Scan with Malwarebytes for Mac:

Malwarebytes searches for malware (short for (malicious software) and spyware. Those make your Mac act in a mislead manor. So scan with it, and remove what is found from the quarantine. It is created by longtime users of these forums making it the only reliable Security Software for a Mac.

Downloads:

  1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac
  2. Malwarebytes Uninstaller

D. Remove Login Items:

See if there are any Login Items in your user's account. If so, they may may be running in the background.

E. View the Force Quit Menu:

Is there anything shown in the Force Quit... menu that reads "(Note Responding)"? If so, Force Quit it.
