False "too many passcode attempts reset apple watch and pair again"

My Apple Watch was fine when I put it on its charger last night. This morning it gives me this message. Why? No one touched it until I took it off charger this morning.

Did not forget it and did not try to enter it. The watch woke with this message displayed. What would cause this.

I'm looking at Watch Ap on iPhone, but do not see a way to override the lock-out.
