messages not synching between iPhone and Mac

after working perfectly forever, messages stopped syncing between my iPhone and Mac after I changed my Apple ID password. I have double checked to make sure that I'm signed in to the same Apple ID on both devices, enabled iCloud sharing of messages and so on, but messages are still not syncing. what can I do?

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

logged off my apple id and logged back in on both devices and messages synched properly. and to do this several times before it worked.
