Hi, We are traveling to Alaska in May. My cell phone carrier cannot promise me that I will have service. I have been thinking of getting an Apple watch. If I have wi-fi or cellular Apple watch will I still be able to receive texts or calls or will it do the same as what my phone is doing in that area?
The Apple Watch does not support roaming. When you are outside your carrier's service area, the Apple Watch will revert to a GPS ONLY Mode, and depend on the iPhone for all cellular communications. As long as your iPhone is nearby, the Apple Watch will do everything it always did, just using the iPhone's radios, instead of its own.
You don't state where you are going to use the Watch. There are two regions for the Apple GPS+Cellular watch, North America and the rest of the world. If you are going to reside in the US, Canada, Mexico or Puerto Rico it will work. If you aren't it probably will not. If your cell phone carrier has promised you it will work make sure to get this part of a contract with them and that they will reimburse you for the price of the Watch if it doesn't work. Also, you will have to return to North America (and possibly the US) for any hardware service.
