My phone is permanently unavailable. How do I unlock it without having all my data lost?

I only see black screen and it says iPhone unavailable. When I connect to iTunes I get the option to update my phone to regain all the data and settings, but then it says I need the latest iTunes version, which I have. Other option is to restore it to factory settings. If I do that, I will lose very important data. I don’t have back up.
