I only see black screen and it says iPhone unavailable. When I connect to iTunes I get the option to update my phone to regain all the data and settings, but then it says I need the latest iTunes version, which I have. Other option is to restore it to factory settings. If I do that, I will lose very important data. I don’t have back up.

If your data isn't already backed up, you don't.
You need to back up before something catastrophic happens, not after...
Once the phone is disabled, anything on it is gone.
I know, but it is too late now. But why does it give me option to save my data then?
