Message notifications using Bluetooth

Message notifications when connected to a Bluetooth speaker come through the phone instead of the Bluetooth speaker causing me to miss text and other notifications. Incoming phone calls will interrupt the music and cause the ringtone to play in the speakers as they should. I have an iPhone XR running IOS 15.3.1 and primarily use JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth devices. I've literally spent hours researching this and checking/changing settings on the phone and the problem persists.

All notification settings are "on", the phone is not in DND or set to silent. Message notifications do come through the phone whether or not Bluetooth is activated. The problem is that I can't hear them if I'm not right next to the phone. There has to be a stupid, easy fix that I'm missing. Thanks!
