Unable to play video using Apple Lightning to Digital AV adapter

I am trying to use the hdmi lightning adapter and mirror ESPN+ from an iPhone or iPad and get the following message:

Unable to play video

The operation couldn’t be completed.

(SC watch playback facade error domain error 5)

I am able to use the adapter with other applications and mirror to the tv. I do not have a smart tv so I cannot AirPlay.

Not sure if I can get around this problem and get it to work or if it is being blocked by ESPN. I have tried to troubleshoot without success.
