many random files called "Icon?"

Recently, a large number of files (nearly 500 of them) from a few KB up to several megabytes have appeared all over my many external and internal drives. They all use either the icon of a very old app which hasn't worked since high sierra or the word "exec" in green on a dark gray rectangle, and the name attached to these files is simply "Icon?".


Can these be safely discarded?

That sounds completely logical, because I've always done lots of custom icons (because we can on a Mac, right?)
