AirPods disconnecting from iPhone with Apple Watch notifications

When I receive a notification or interact with my Apple Watch (click the buttons or just use it) my AirPod pros disconnect from my iPhone and connect to my watch which pauses my music and then when I hit play on my phone music comes out of the speakers rather than my headphones. Everything is updated fully- how can I stop this from happening?

Hi T22e,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

We have some instructions that should be able to help stop this from happening: Switch AirPods between Apple devices.

"To stop AirPods from automatically switching away from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, do the following:

  1. Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
  2. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings  > Bluetooth, then tap the Actions Available button next to the name of your AirPods.
  3. Tap Connect to This [device], then tap When Last Connected to This [device]."

Have a fantastic day!

Hello T22e,

In order to see the options listed above, you will need to make sure you are wearing the AirPods and they are connected to your iPhone. You can verify the connection in Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone. The article you were previously provided shows you how.

Best Regards.
