The disk image couldn't be opened - The operation couldn’t be completed. Permission denied

That is the problem and message I get when I try to open them.  There are 6 disk images on this external disk and 4 refuse to open suddenly.  They worked fine for about a year.  Also, the verify function in Disk Utility can not access them.

They are password protected and yes, I know the password.  So that is not the problem.

This happened (could be coincidence) after I upgraded to 12.3.1.

Any tips how to open them?

Mac mini 2018 or later

aha. thanks. could you tell me the Terminal command to use?

Please disregard what I said about "diskutil" above. I must have been on the iPad then.

The command you want is:

hdiutil attach /path/to/your/dmg/file

It will ask you for the password on the command line. If successful, it will print out a list of mounted volumes. One of those should be your disk image volume. You'll have to manually switch to the Finder and navigate to it.
