Can’t pay for my Apple subscription with gift card
Title says it all, was I scammed? Can I pay for it?

You can use Apple ID balance to pay for subscription renewals, but you must also have a primary payment method on file with your Apple ID to maintain the renewal.
If you have Apple ID balance available, that will always be consumed first before charging the payment method on file.
