If your printer supports AirPrint, then use it! I had a font/layout issue with my Brother printer while using a different driver, but when I switched to the AirPrint driver, the issue disappeared and I had perfect printouts. For some reason when I added my Brother printer macOS did not automatically choose AirPrint so I assumed incorrectly that my printer did not support it. I only discovered the issue after a co-worker used the printer with no issues. That was when I realized he was using AirPrint while I was using one of the open source drivers. AirPrint is like what Plug and Play was years ago, but now it comes to printers.
FYI, AirPrint is not just for Macs. From what I understand the person who has supported the CUPS printer drivers for years at Apple is now working on adding AirPrint support to CUPS for the open source community because AirPrint is supposed to eliminate the need for specialized printer drivers which prevents older printers from working with newer operating systems (no AirPrint will not magically help older printers that did not have AirPrint support built in).
