I believe Brother is providing a CUPS driver which is an open source driver, so Apple is able to update it with a newer CUPS version of the driver since Apple did provide CUPS drivers as well.

Edit: Try adding the printer again, but take note of what driver options are available. I wonder if there could be an AirPrint driver for this printer. I just realized I'm using a Brother printer from near that time frame and I'm able to use AirPrint, but the AirPrint driver did not show up automatically as I had to click on the drop-down list box for the driver and manually select AirPrint. It is possible my printer is just a bit newer than your printer so you may not have this option. You can still keep the current printer setup, just customize the name of the new setup if AirPrint is available.

Text Edit is a simple built-in macOS app which makes it much easier to test the basic printer functionality with the currently installed driver. Other apps may add a lot of other configuration & document formatting options which make them unreliable for basic troubleshooting especially when we have no idea how your system & apps are configured. When troubleshooting, you want to use the simplest tools available.

Did you install the Apple update?

If your printer supports AirPrint, then use it! I had a font/layout issue with my Brother printer while using a different driver, but when I switched to the AirPrint driver, the issue disappeared and I had perfect printouts. For some reason when I added my Brother printer macOS did not automatically choose AirPrint so I assumed incorrectly that my printer did not support it. I only discovered the issue after a co-worker used the printer with no issues. That was when I realized he was using AirPrint while I was using one of the open source drivers. AirPrint is like what Plug and Play was years ago, but now it comes to printers.

FYI, AirPrint is not just for Macs. From what I understand the person who has supported the CUPS printer drivers for years at Apple is now working on adding AirPrint support to CUPS for the open source community because AirPrint is supposed to eliminate the need for specialized printer drivers which prevents older printers from working with newer operating systems (no AirPrint will not magically help older printers that did not have AirPrint support built in).

I don't need AirPrint and all the fancy things! Im old fashioned.. I had the HL-2240 for 8 years ( something like that) it broke so got this figuring all the same . I ll update the driver then go from there...I just use it to print from Mac mail or whatever on my iMac..

yes but what does text edit have to do with anything..I print from Mac mail and safari. Have to always adjust the scale. Never had that problem with the older one I had.?
