I'd be very surprised if your MBP wasn't supposed to turn on the backlight. I have two older laptops and they both do, although neither can run Monterey. I do have a 2020 M1 MacBook Air running Monterey and the backlight comes on when the screen with the Apple logo and progress bar reaches about half way.


Do you have the firmware password set? I don't on any of my Macs.
