Which Mac & version of macOS do you have? All my Mac laptops already turn on the backlight by the time you get to the login screen.
FWIW, Apple does not respond.

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro running Monterey and the backlight comes on for the FileVault login screen.
Only thing I can think of is resetting SMC as suggested.
Just a thought, if you don't have a firmware password set, you can try resetting the SMC.

I'd be very surprised if your MBP wasn't supposed to turn on the backlight. I have two older laptops and they both do, although neither can run Monterey. I do have a 2020 M1 MacBook Air running Monterey and the backlight comes on when the screen with the Apple logo and progress bar reaches about half way.

You're welcome. That wasn't exactly what I meant. You can have a firmware password and a login password. If a firmware password is set, it comes up before the login screen opens. So no backlight. If not, the keyboard should be backlit before the log in screen opens.

Yes, I have to enter a password.
I find it annoying if I am trying to enter my password and the ambient lighting is dim.
Just a first world problem.

If you don't have one set then I'm not sure what it could be. Unfortunately a MacBook Pro is one of the few Macs I don't own so I can't check.
