Email disappearing before finishing

If I switch from composing an email to say contacts, the email is no longer there when I return to email

iPad mini, iOS 12

Email disappears When I delete an email from my Inbox, it disappears totally. In the past it has gone to the Trash. How can I change this?

Are you certain that the email has not been saved to the Mail Drafts folder?
