Unable to login to icloud.com

After singin in to icloud.com a window pops saying "iCloud encountered an error while trying to connect to the server." see attached image

Get help signing into iCloud

Before you begin, check the Apple System Status page to make sure there are no outages or scheduled maintenances currently affecting iCloud and make sure that you’re signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on all of your devices. 

If you can't remember your Apple ID or password

If you can't remember your Apple ID, check these settings and services to find it. If you've forgotten your Apple ID password, learn how to reset it

If you get a message that your Apple ID is locked or disabled

If you or someone else enters your password, security questions, or other account information incorrectly too many times, your Apple ID automatically locks to protect your security and you can't sign in to any Apple services. Learn how to unlock your Apple ID

If you can't sign in to iCloud.com

Learn what to do if you have trouble signing in to iCloud.com

If you're not able to sign in using cellular data only

Make sure that your iPhone, iPad, or PC has a strong Internet connection and that you've turned on cellular data on your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data. If this setting is off, you might not be able to access your Apple ID and iCloud when not connected to a Wi-Fi network. 

If you're having trouble receiving verification codes, or your verification code is rejected

Learn how to get a verification code and sign in to iCloud with two-factor authentication. If your device is running iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite or earlier, sign in using two-step verification instead.

OK, I found the solution on another forum. Apparently the iCloud certificate expired. (I've been using Macs for well over 20 years and this is the first time I've ever encountered this issue.)


You can download a new certificate from Apple at:


https://www.apple.com/certificateauthority/AppleISTCA2G1.cer


Double-click to install in your Keychain. The forum said it was good until May 20. Hope I don't have to do this every month!

I have the same problem. I can't log into iCloud on Safari for Mac... ironically, I have to use Firefox. In fact, I got an error ("Safari can't establish a secure connection to idmsa.apple.com" trying to sign in to reply to this post in Safari, and am typing this in Firefox also.


The bigger issue is that Notes suddenly stopped syncing between my phone and Mac. The notes show up when I log into iCloud on my Mac (through Firefox since Safari won't work!), so they're syncing from my phone to the server, but they don't sync down to my Mac. I unchecked and checked Notes in System Preferences --> iCloud, to no avail.


Here's a nice pic showing me logged into iCloud on Firefox with my Notes synced, my Notes app with nothing there, and an error message trying to log into iCloud on Safari. Yet Apple's status page says iCloud is working fine.
