Sound Input and Output devices on my iMAC have disappeared

Somehow, I have lost my sound input and output devices. Can I use a bluetooth speaker if these are gone? How can I get the input and output devices back?

Why canI no longer see the built-in speakers in the Sound system settings on my iMac? The speakers on my iMac were working fine yesterday. Now they seem to have vanished completely. In the Sounds setting, there are no internal speakers listed. Any ideas please?

Restart. If no joy, restart in safe mode, let it sit for a few minutes then restart normally and retest.
