iPhone recovery mode

I'm trying to get my iPhone back on. the apple just keeps coming on and off the screen. when i hold the power button it tells me to connect it to my computer, which i did, then when i click update, This message keeps coming up, but, I am connected to my wifi "The iPhone software update server could not be contacted."
