Multiple `softwareupdate` processes Mac OS Big Sur 11.4

Hi,

For whatever reason I have > 20 `softwareupdates` (/usr/sbin/softwareupdate) running at all times. I have disabled automatic checking but the processes keep spawning after restart. Any idea what could be causing this?

Multiple softwareupdate processes On a macbook pro running big sur 11.7.1, I currently have 23 processes of /usr/bin/softwareupdate . From top they seem to mostly be in the sleeping state, but I do catch them in the running state from time-to-time. It looks like the processes are being started roughly every 30 minutes, but never ending. Any way to address this? I don't have a minor version update available, and I don't want to do a major update right now due to loss of time for the update and recovery (rebuilding all my mailboxes, etc., which seems to be needed with every major update). (I tried to include ps output, but that results in "You have included content in your post that is not permitted")

Monterey: Not reloading Apple software after shutdown When I shut down with Pages and/or Numbers and/or Safari and/or Mail open, I find recently (I am on MacOS version 12.5.1) that these Apple programs do not reload when I start the Mac and log in again. Other software (some of it from Apple) that may have been open such as Contacts, Calendar, Zoom, Skype, Hey reload automatically. I have always checked the box on the Shut Down confirmation window which requests reloading. Can anyone suggest a fix?

Sure, Running Big Sur 11.4 dates back to May 26, 2021

Current version of Big Sur is Version 11.6.5 from Match 31, 2022

We are looking at almost a Year behind in updates.

It is usually best practice to keep the version of macOS up-to-date.

There have been several Bug and Security Fixes along this road from 11.4 to 11.6.5
