See Authorization vs. association - Apple Community. Once you are aware that you're only allowed to deauthorize all once a year, and if you know you're going to need all five authorizations, you should make an effort to keep track, and deauthorize individual machines to free up space for another. If you've been caught out by say a failed hard drive you can try asking Apple Support nicely and see if they can reset your account earlier than usual. They may still say no.

Thanks Niel but I have a different problem ---I already de-authorized my computers and need to do it again but Apple won't allow it because you only can do this once a year--I have multiple computers with multiple drives so whenever I add a new drive I get this situation--can you help with re-de-authorizing ?
I guess I should add that I have four Macs and in two different locations so that is part of the problem and sometimes I upgrade my drives which can also lead to other problems--so perhaps someone can tell me where to talk to these other people who can give me permission to use my own computers.
Follow the instructions in the second section of the Related Article above.

As noted, you can ask Apple Support. You can deauthorize a computer before performing an upgrade, then authorize it afterwards.
