I can't disable Filevault to update my OS

Macbook, running 11.3 hoping to update to Monterey but it requires turning off Filevault. Sys Prefs is unresponsive to the attempt, notes some users are not able to unlock the disc but the only user is me... Terminal command sudo fdesetup disable returns"FileVault was not disabled (-69594)

So, any ideas or do I just have to suffer and have "Updates Available" pop up every day to remind me I cant update.

Interesting...

two thoughts

—try the upgrade when booted into SafeBoot Mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Takes a bit longer to get to the login screen, does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache,  etc.

Login an launch the installer.

—Another possibility from the Terminal.app is upgrade your Big Sur to the current stable macOS 11.6.5 release before you try to proceed.

update using the command line,  this will bypass the secure token/owner check from the Software Update pref pane:

sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R

(note your psswd will not echo, type it in anyway use the enter/return key to proceed)

flag definition:

-i Install

-a All appropriate updates

-R Automatically restart (or shut down) if required to complete installation)

Hmmm...I did know Filevault had to be dis-abled to upgrade the macOS (?)

if it is encrypting you have to wait till it completes to proceed....

Is this an old issue new issue, what changed?

What exact Mac is this?

It sounds to me like you have other issues involved.

Is Filevault enable? From your Terminal:

fdesetup status

ref:

Turning FileVault on after your Mac is set it up can take quit some time, needs AC power, you can not turn it off until the process completes.

While sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R was able to get me up to 11.6.5 I am still unable to turn off FileVault with system prefs or terminal and downloading the update still asks to shut it down so I'm still stuck

We do not see a lot of these here— and I have never seen this issue before.

Is this the OEM drive that shipped with the Mac when new or third party upgrade...?
