I have an imac 21 in and it will not accept anything from the keyboard to sign in

Try a different KB; USB type. It your KB is wireless, attach it to your iMac directly with the charging cable, that will make it act as a USB KB. But still, to eliminate the KB you need to try another on you Mac. Maybe try your KB on another computer and see if it functions there.
