I phone 12 save a picture in a message

Is there a way to save a photo in a message. My niece lost her cat and I’m trying to help her but I can’t upload the picture sent with her message

There should be a download icon next to the photo. Tap it and then Save Photo. Or hold your finger on the photo and a floating menu will appears with a Save option.
