Time Machine

So if I have Time Machine set to backup automatically, do I need to purchase an external hard drive or does the backup go to my MAC's HD. I have plenty of storage on it, but I purchased a SanDisk portable

SSD. I also use ICLOUD so did I purchase this disk unnecessarily?

Thanks

I also don't leave my backup drive plugged in all the time. (I use a laptop so it is not practical to have the backup drive connected at all times.) But I check the box to back up automatically and suggest that you do that also, and then when you do connect the backup drive it will automatically make a new backup if the previous one was made more than an hour ago.

Thankyou, so I've done a backup to my new external drive. I did one before I upgraded to Monterey & then again after

I installed it. I thought maybe I made an unnecessary purchase. So on my Time Machine app should I uncheck the box,

where it says automatically backup or leave it checked. I don't leave the disk plugged in all the time either.
