convert external drive from mbr to gpt

Just a little background about what I'm trying to do - I've got a 15"

MBP that is my "daily driver" and I'm trying to get the data off of an

older 17" MBP because the MBP now is only booting to the desktop (which

populates the folders, etc.) but doesn't allow me to navigate finder,

etc. Also, I'm unable to click on things (on the 17"). Anyway, I

succeeded in getting to boot in Recovery mode, now just trying to get

the data off. I have a 1T Samsung external drive that I'm having trouble

using. Whenever I try to recover from the 17" to the Samsung I get an

error telling me that I need a GUID partition or something. Currently

trying to get the Sam to work but not having much success formatting

getting it from MBR to GPT. Any advice would be appreciated.

MacBook Pro 17″, macOS 10.13

tjk, your directions seem to have worked, however, when I tried to restore my old (failing?) hard drive to the Samsung I get the error message "Restore process has failed... then in details it says

Validating target...

Validating source...

The volume on device "/dev/disk0" is not of type Apple_HFS or Apple_UFS

Could not validate souce - device not configured

The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 6.)

Operation failed.

Also, just came across this article: Disk Utility restore failing: Could not v… - Apple Community

However, whenever I boot normally it only locks up and so there is no way I see to install the Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) the article refers to.

Any suggestions? Also, I too have run the "First Aid" process on my Macbook's drive and it says all is fine. :-/

Okay, so the whole original issue (my 17" not apparently loading the desktop, etc. properly) may have been a non-issue altogether. I've tried rebooting again and it behaved the same way, however, I waited a longer time before trying to navigate the file hierarchy and eventually it populated the folders/files that I'm wanting to pull off. The Samsung drive is working just fine to hold the files I'm copying over. I appreciate your efforts to help and sorry for any inconvenience. Best, Jon
