Use of Airtag without an iphone

Can an airtag be used to track a family member or an object if there is no iphone nearby?

It will be connected to MY phone, and therefore my second question is: will the battery drain as my iphone won't be nearby?

So far, they have been showing "with you" for the whole weekend (Obvioiusly - because they were) I wanted to see how they would report location without my phone being nearby (Eg as though they had been lost) - so I turned off my phone half an hour ago (4:00pm local time) before returning from a walk. I am now home (with the air tags), but my phone is still off. None of the devices (nor my phone) show a recent location in Findmy. The phone is reporting last activitiy at 00:12 (12 past midnight local time) with no location. Which is odd since it has been on all day until I just turned it off. All the airtags are also showing the same time, with no location. The airtags are now also in a house full of iDevices. I've just placed my wife's iPhone (bluetooth on) next to them, and still no location reported (I understood they could use other iPhones to report their location) As far as I can see at the moment, they are not going to be much use for finding stuff when outside range of my phone. What am I missing? Thanks.

Discovering a samsung phone with an air tag if my husband has an AirTag on his phone, and only his samsung on and with it... Will the findme app and my apple device find where it is if it isn't near another apple device? I am wondering if his phones bluetooth, wifi signal will transmit the AirTag signal out.

No, its only means of communication is Bluetooth so around 50meters so if no iOS device within range it’s dead in the water
