iphone11 and iMac not connecting

I want to Airdrop photos from my iPhone11 to my iMac....why aren't they recognizing each other? Bluetooth says it cannot connect.

Because AirDrop does not require the two devices to be paired. It just requires that Bluetooth be turned on. See the instructions for using AirDrop here, How to use AirDrop on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support and this for the Mac.
