Imac to macbook pro screen mirroring

Trying to screen mirror from macbook pro 2020 to imac 27 2020 using a thunderbolt 3 cable. When I hook both of them up using the TB 3 cable the Macbook starts to charge. If I plug in the power cord and the TB 3 cable, nothing happens. any help? Is there a short cut? I did hit option in the preferences, hit detect displays but nothing happens.

Neither of those Mac’s support Target Display Mode.

Nope, however if you can upgrade both Macs to Monterey 12.3 or later you can use Universal Control.

Please refer to Universal Control: Use a single keyboard and mouse between Mac and iPad - Apple Support please read this VERY carefully to ensure you have the hardware requirements and also upgrade to Monterey 12.3 on both devices!!!

If you cannot run Universal Control, then your best solution is an external display.
