It sounds as if you have more than one watch face installed. You can switch between them by swiping. If you only want to have one on your watch, open the Watch app on your phone and tap "Edit" to the right of "My Faces". You can then delete the ones you don't want.

Have you tried pushing in the digital crown to go back to the watch face
Failing that have you tried a force reset by holding in the side button and the digital crown for 10 seconds till you see the Apple logo then release

Pushing and releasing the Digital Crown did not go back to my watch face. Instead, the display goes back to the menu (showing all the apps).
I shutdown and restarted and had the same experience.
