Hello everyone,

I'm asking this question for a friend who has a brand new iMac. She is using OS 10.6.4, and is using DSL through AT&T.

She gets an error message that I have never seen before (and I've been using a Mac since 1985). She forwarded a picture of the error message to me, and what it looks like is a black background with a small white border, and the icon of the Apple power button in the background (on top of the black background). The message says the following:

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button".

Below this, I'm guessing it says the same thing but it is in 3 additional languages.

I have never seen an Apple product with an error message that is inside of a black window that just appears on-screen like that. And the thing that has me scratching my head is that it says to restart by holding down the power button for several seconds. Well, in my opinion, that's not a restart---that is a FORCED restart. If this was a legitimate Apple message, wouldn't they be more specific as to what it is you're doing---and why???

This whole thing makes no sense to me, so I wanted to check here and see if anyone is familiar with this type of thing.

She also said that ever since this has been happening, there has been a "hesitation" in the wireless keyboard and the wireless mouse responding (both have full battery levels). And then just before the "restart" message appears, she told me that a grey film came down across the screen just prior to the restart message window appearing.

Any thoughts on this? Thank you so much!

Ah, okay....in that very first link that you provided, it shows the exact picture of the message that she received. I will have to read through all of this stuff to figure out what it is (I've never heard of a kernel panic attack).

Just off the top of your head, is there a simple explanation as to what might have caused it to occur? Something like a virus that might have been downloaded or something? I'm a heavy user of my Mac's, and I've never experienced anything like that. Weird.

Normally, some kind of hardware conflict or issue. Read through the first four items and you should get a feel for what's caused it or for what to do to determine the cause.

Okay, sounds good. Thank you very much!

Thanks for the feedback. If you come across something that doesn't fix the issue, come back. Good computing.

I just had this happen after owning an IMac since January 09. Worried because I haven't added anything new in the way of hardware or software although just before it, Firefox kept on crashing (because of Flash I think). I'll check out those links...

Right before this incident, Firefox had been crashing and restarting repeatedly - flash wasn't working, not sure if that was the culprit. I closed Firefox down and used Chrome, but while the computer was just sitting not being used I got the restart message. Here is the report :
