Something has recently changed with my Ipad. All messages were stored until recently. Now if I delete a message from my iphone it is deleted from my ipad also. How can I change this back?

It sounds like you have activated iCloud Messages. Check Settings>Apple ID>iCloud>Messages. If Messages is turned on there, then your Messages are stored in iCloud and are synced to all of your devices. Deleting a message on one device deletes it on all devices. If you wish to handle messages on each individual device, then you need to turn off Messages in iCloud.
