What was updated? Or do you mean your OS was upgraded ... completely new version?

If you upgraded your OS, there should be a folder on your desktop with information on what was relocated.

Have you searched for the missing data with Spotlight. It should still be there; it made have been relocated. Partial file names will work for the search.

If you can't find your data, your backup may be your only hope.
