AirPods Max disconnect/reconnect on AppleTV

Whenever I remove my AirPods Max from my head they automatically disconnect and then immediately reconnect on my AppleTV.

It seems to happen even when I leave them on my neck.

It has on a few occasions happened while I’m using the headphones.

The problem doesn’t occur with my iPhone 11 although I cannot be sure as I have only used the AirPods with my iPhone to test them.

The ear detection function is toggled to OFF however I don’t think this is related in any way as ear detection turns off the AirPods but the video or music will still play. When my AirPods disconnect they cause the video to pause.

Also it seems that only video streaming services are affected as removing the headphones while using the Apple Music app doesn’t cause the disconnect.

Can anyone help? I’ve tried the usual resetting and restarting and re-pairing.

Hello NeddySeagoon,

Thanks for your post to Apple Support Communities. Based on what you describe, the issue with your AirPods Max might be related to Automatic Switching. First, we'd recommend making sure you have that feature disabled.

Turn off automatic switching
If you don't want your AirPods to switch automatically, you can turn off automatic switching on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.

On your iPhone or iPad
1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
2. Tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
3. Tap Connect to This iPhone [or iPad].
4. Tap When Last Connected to This iPhone [or iPad].
5. To turn on this feature again, tap Automatically.

On your Mac
1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
2. Click the Options button next to your AirPods in the list of devices.
3. From the Connect to This Mac menu, choose When Last Connected to This Mac.
4. To turn this feature on again, choose Automatically.

On your Apple TV
1. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your Apple TV, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.

You will also want to make sure that all your devices, including your Apple TV has a fully updated OS.
