Mac will not start

our 10 year old mac will not start - we had a power surge and now it loads about 50% of the way and locks

It sounds like there was a power surge when the electricity came back on. Unless your Mac is connected via a surge protecter, you have very likely had damage done to the computer. I would have it checked.
